I remember interviewing the band during this tour, 2001-2 I believe, they were still signed on with Brody's ex husbands label HellCat which we had a in with, and I was a 21 yr old fan writer for a zine, my contact had arranged for me to meet with the band backstage and talk about the newest album, having previously covered their debut album and seeing the lineup changed I was directed to ask about the influences and interests that made up the songs on the album. I was sitting with Andy the drummer having a conversation about inequality- and at the time I was an undocumented student trying to pursue higher education and hitting a lot of obstacles as we discussed this topic he began to tell me about how Brody was an immigrant to the USA and how she came up with the ideas for the songs on the album. The summer before she had picked up a number of history books and Andy told me about how Brody was inspired by the American revolutionary spirit and this song in particular, "Seneca Falls"and how after reading the history of women's liberation movement Brody was inspired to write it. As we discussed this detail Brody interjects from the back of the Palace (an old venue across from Capitol Records) excitedly how inspiring Women's Lib, abolitionists movements and the smaller scrimmages that took place as people fought for dignity were central to themes of the album. Even the album cover "Sing Sing Deathhouse" is tribute to the men tortured and dehumanized in the prison institution. The album cover is a historical picture of men being traumatized by images on a screen as torture in jail. All this she expresses with great excitement as she hears Andy tell me about the album, then they are called in for soundcheck- I graciously thanked them for sharing details and wish them a great set. Well, I was supposed to write about all this in a story for the zine, but my story got cut and I never got to share it so now I have this little anecdote from 20 years ago hope you enjoy it. If I had a chance to interview them again the only question I'd have for Brody now is did you ever think you'd be inspiring so many young girls with this song? 20 years later as Roe v. Wade is ended? x/x

This song is so deep. The need for a minimum common ground of meaning in the middle of a world full of grief and disappointment where we are so small. The utopian dreams of unity are dead, but the individualistic solutions (our lives as the parallel lines traced by independent points) ain't looking much better, either.
